Marigold

Marigold is a little orange and yellow tadpole
trike made just for me by Greenspeed
in Knoxfield, Victoria - Australia. We traveled there in March,
2003 to tour and bring her back to Oregon.
When I started falling over
going uphill on my bikes, I started researching trikes. Since there
aren't a lot of trikes around to try, it was a bit of a problem
to decide what or where to look. After finding a "small"
trike to try for size and finding my head half way up the back of
the seat, I discovered by careful perusal of web sites that Greenspeed
makes a trike addressed to the "little people of the world".
This cemented my decision. Mick Sims was very patient in answering
all my queries and tending to details as we chose the components
to make up this special trike.
Rainy day in Sutherlin Oregon
The trike has an 8 cog cassette,
sachs hub and in place of 3 chainrings, a schlumpf mountain gear.
This allows MAJOR low gears. Even loaded, I can go uphill as slow
as I need to and never get tired. Slow, yes! Fall down, never! Of
course a slow walker might pass me, but I keep going and my heart
rate stays down where it is supposed to be.

This trike is made to carry no more than 40 pounds
of baggage when touring. HA! I carry no more than 25 pounds including
my baby computer and books. When touring, I always carry Gore-tex
rain gear and have always needed it. The purple panniers are not
full, but the back pockets are stuffed because that is where the
raingear travels when not in use.

Marigold breaks down into 2
suitcases which hold the complete trike as well as my two panniers
with contents. While I have to get through the airport with 2 suitcases,
that includes everything. Actually, I need to make some spacers
because if I were to pack the cases full, they would be too heavy
for me to manage, not to mention be over the weight.limit for the
airline.

Rather than stand on my head to work on her, I put a pulley on my
garage ceiling so I can suspend her to a convenient height.
